For 35 years, Hammertown has celebrated life in the Hudson Valley, helping people furnish their homes and connect to their neighbors. Hammertown is a lifestyle store and interior design service. With three locations—in Pine Plains and Rhinebeck, NY, and Great Barrington, MA—Hammertown is a destination for customers from all over the Northeast.
We offer everything you need to feel at home, including the warm welcome. From furniture, rugs and lighting to tabletop, decor, antiques and gifts, you will find what you need at Hammertown. The stores themselves, and the rooms they help to furnish, are entirely realized spaces full of heart and soul. As one longtime client put it, “What Hammertown sells is important, but I’d argue that what it stands for is even more essential: hospitality, community, authenticity.”
As a gathering place and local resource, Hammertown promotes community. Friends come to the store to shop together, or arrive alone and meet new friends. The comfortable, inviting spaces are conducive to lingering...
Hammertown is the exclusive regional purveyor of a number of highly coveted brands, including: CISCO HOME, JOHN DERIAN, MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS, ETHNICRAFT, LEE INDUSTRIES (Rhinebeck and Pine Plains only).
Everyone, who knows Hammertown, knows that Joan Osofsky pioneered and institutionalized the “collected” look—a mash-up of styles based on the homeowners’ unique aesthetic and the timeless attributes of good design: comfort, character, harmony and good proportions.
–Dennis Wedlick, award-winning architect
In a Hammertown store, there is room for everyone. On any given day, customers will include young marrieds, twenty-something hipsters and doyennes of design. Since the beginning, Joan was determined to create a brand that is both aspirational and accessible. It encompasses a broad range of good quality pieces that last forever—so that the most expensive ones are worth saving up for.
Hammertown customers are not confined to a particular demographic but unified by their quest for beauty and inspiration, by a shared passion for design and by a desire for something beyond the standard retail experience. They like to take their time browsing—in the stores and “window-shopping” online—and to be surprised and intrigued by what they find. Hammertown customers value the entire experience as much as the purchase.
Because of the friendly atmosphere, the attentive staff and the feeling of home, customers have a sense of belonging at Hammertown. This means they want to come back again and again. And because home is a place that is ever the same and yet constantly evolving, there is always a reason to do so.
All For One and One For All
As a gathering place and local resource, Hammertown promotes community. Friends come to the store to shop together, or arrive alone and meet new friends. The comfortable, inviting spaces are conducive to lingering. But the brand also extends itself further to engage the community, hosting pop-up dinners, cooking classes, book -signings and design workshops. One location even offered a U-pick kale garden, where customers could wander and help themselves.
Hammertown stores employ local residents and the brand has been an active supporter of community causes and charities. Trade Secrets, a yearly event that Hammertown has helped organize for two decades, is a major fundraiser that donates 10 percent of sales to women’s support services in the area. Twice a year, the Pine Plains flagship holds a Tent Sale. Entrance fees are donated to the local community center and town firehouse. When a beloved local farm faced a crisis that threatened to put an end to its 35 years of organic farming, Hammertown helped to lead an effort to make sure it was able to weather the storm. In ways big and small, the brand seeks to be a good neighbor and, in return, is a cherished pillar of the community.
